  5. What if work were not a burden to endure for the reward of consumption,
  6. but a form of contribution so aligned with one's gifts that it generates energy rather than depleting it?
  7. What if the economy were designed not to extract human labor, but to cultivate human flourishing?
  8. This book explores the most intimate intersection of economics and life.
  9. What we do all day, why it matters, and how the economy could be reorganized so that the answer to both questions is the same.
  10. Part 1. Redefining Work
  11. Chapter 1. From Jobs to Purposeful Contribution Your work is to discover your world, and then with all your heart give yourself to it.
  12. Attributed to the Buddha, the modern concept of a job, a standardized package of tasks performed for a specified number of hours in exchange for wage,
  13. is barely two centuries old. For the vast majority of human history, people did not have jobs.
  14. They had roles within living communities. They farmed, hunted, built, healed, taught, crafted, governed and created within webs of mutual obligation and shared purpose.
  15. The work was inseparable from the community it served and the identity of the person performing it.
  16. The Industrial Revolution changed this by separating work from life.
  17. The factory system required workers to leave their homes, travel to a central location, perform repetitive tasks under managerial supervision, and sell their time by the hour.
  18. Karl Marx called this alienation, the separation of the worker from the product, from the process, from other workers, and from their own creative nature.
  19. Whatever one thinks of Marx's political prescriptions, his diagnosis of alienation remains devastatingly accurate.
  20. Gallup's global workplace surveys consistently find that only 15 to 20 percent of workers worldwide are engaged in their work.
  21. The remaining 80 percent are either passively disengaged, sleepwalking through their workday, or actively disengaged, acting out their unhappiness and undermining engaged co-workers.
  22. This is not a minor inefficiency. It is the largest waste in the global economy, the squandering of human creative energy on a scale that dwarfs any material waste stream.
  23. But here is the appreciative inquiry turn, where IS engagement thriving, what conditions produce it, and what can we learn from the places where work already functions as purposeful contribution?
  24. The evidence converges on three conditions, autonomy, Daniel Pink's synthesis of self-determination theory research drive 2009, identifies autonomy, the desire to direct our own lives as the most powerful intrinsic motivator.
  25. When people have control over what they work on, task autonomy, when they do it, time autonomy, how they do it, technique autonomy, and with whom, team autonomy, engagement and performance increase dramatically.
  26. The row results only work environment, programs at Best Buy and other companies, where employees are evaluated solely on output, with complete freedom over when and where they work consistently show 35 percent increases in productivity and 90 percent decreases in voluntary turnover.
  27. Mastery, the desire to get better at something that matters. Mihai's sixet mahali's concept of flow, the state of complete absorption in a challenging activity perfectly matched to one skill level, describes the experience of mastery in action.
  28. Flow states are associated with peak performance, deep satisfaction, and the experience of time disappearing.
  29. They occur when the challenge is just beyond current capability, not so easy as to be boring, not so hard as to be paralyzing.
  30. The art of work design is creating conditions where flow states are frequent and accessible.
  31. Purpose, the yearning to do what we do in the service of something larger than ourselves.
  32. Amy Rosessniewski's research distinguishes between people who experience their work as a job, a means to a paycheck, a career, a path to advancement, or a calling, a source of meaning and contribution.
  33. The distinction is not determined by the type of work, but by the meaning frame the person brings to it.
  34. Hospital cleaners who see their work as contributing to patient healing show the same engagement levels as surgeons.
  35. The purpose doesn't have to be grand. It has to be felt. Mondragon's cooperatives embody all three conditions structurally.
  36. Worker owners have genuine autonomy. They elect their managers and vote on major decisions.
  37. The cooperative's educational system, including its own university, Mondragon University, invests heavily in mastery development.
  38. And the shared ownership structure makes purpose tangible. When you own the enterprise, your contribution matters to a community you can see.
  39. Chapter two, the neuroscience of meaningful work. The brain is a meaning-making organ. Lisa Feldman Barrett.
  40. Neuroscience has confirmed what wisdom traditions have always taught. Meaning is not a luxury. It is a biological necessity.
  41. Victor Frankel, the psychiatrist who survived Auschwitz, observed that prisoners who maintained a sense of meaning, a reason to endure, were more likely to survive than those who lost it.
  42. His logo therapy, built on this observation, posited that the primary human drive is not pleasure, Freud, or power, Adler, but meaning.
  43. Neuroscience has vindicated Frankel's insight.
  44. Steve Cole's research at UCLA on the genomics of meaning reveals that people with eudaimonic well-being, a sense of purpose, meaning, and contribution, show markedly different gene expression profiles than people with hedonic well-being, pleasure, comfort, consumption.
  45. Even when both groups report the same levels of subjective happiness, eudaimonic well-being is associated with lower inflammatory gene expression and stronger anti-viral immune response.
  46. Hedonic well-being without eudaimonia is associated with the opposite pattern, higher inflammation, weaker immunity.
  47. At the cellular level, purpose-driven living is health-promoting in ways that pleasure alone is not.
  48. The implications for work are profound, an economy that optimizes for consumption, hedonic well-being, while ignoring meaning, eudaimonic well-being, is not just psychologically impoverishing.
  49. It is biologically destructive, producing populations that are materially comfortable but immunologically compromised, chronically inflamed, and vulnerable to the diseases of despair that are ravaging the developed world.
  50. Depression, addiction, suicide, and the autoimmune disorders that correlate with purposelessness.
  51. Conversely, work that provides genuine meaning, the experience of contributing to something that matters, is not just psychologically rewarding.
  52. It is physiologically healing, it strengthens immune function, reduces inflammation, promotes cardiovascular health, and extends lifespan.
  53. The Blue Zone's research, Dan Butner's study of the world's longest-lived communities in Okinawa, Sardinia, Loma Linda, Nikoya, and Ikaria, finds that every Blue Zone population shares a strong sense of purpose.
  54. The Okinawan concept of Ikigai, a reason for being, and the Nikoya concept of plannedavita, reason to live, are not philosophical luxuries, they are longevity technologies.
  55. Designing an economy for human flourishing means designing for meaning, not just for consumption, and meaning, the research consistently shows, comes from contribution, using one's gifts in service of something beyond oneself.
  56. Chapter 3, universal basic income as ecosystem support, a society that can't figure out how to keep its members from starving hasn't solved its most basic problem.
  57. If the economy is a living system, and humans are its most creative selves, then ensuring that every cell has the basic nutrients it needs to function is not charity.
  58. It is systems maintenance. Universal basic income, UBI, a regular cash payment to every citizen, unconditional and sufficient to cover basic needs, has been proposed by thinkers across the political spectrum from Milton Friedman, negative income tax, to Martin Luther King Jr, guaranteed minimum income, to Andrew Young, freedom dividend.
  59. The arguments vary, conservatives emphasize its efficiency over complex welfare bureaucracies, progressives emphasize its potential to eliminate poverty, technologists emphasize its necessity as automation displaces jobs.
  60. The living system's argument is simpler and more fundamental, a healthy organism ensures nutrition reaches every cell.
  61. The empirical evidence is growing and consistently positive. Finland's UBI experiment, 2017 to 2018, gave 2000 unemployed citizens 560 euros per month unconditionally.
  62. Results, recipients showed significantly improved well-being, trust and confidence.
  63. Employment rates were slightly higher than the control group, disproving the fear that UBI would discourage work.
  64. The strongest effects were on mental health and life satisfaction.
  65. The Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration Seed.
  66. In Stockton, California gave 125 residents $500 per month for two years.
  67. Results, full-time employment among recipients rose from 28% to 40%, compared to 32% to 37% in the control group.
  68. Recipients reported reduced anxiety, improved goal setting, and greater financial agency.
  69. The money was spent overwhelmingly on necessities, food, utilities, transportation.

  79. UBI is not a solution to all economic problems.
  80. It is the floor, the minimal circulatory guarantee that ensures the economy's most precious resource, human creative energy, is not wasted through deprivation.
  81. Chapter 4 - Time Banking and Skill Sharing - The Economy of Gifts and Practice - An hour is an hour, Edgar Kahn, Time Banking, the exchange of services measured in hours, where every person's hour is worth the same, is a deceptively simple idea with radical implications.
  82. A lawyer's hour equals a gardener's hour equals a teenager's hour of tech support for elderly neighbors.
  83. The unit of value is time, not money.
  84. The equality is absolute.
  85. Edgar Kahn, the civil rights lawyer, who developed modern time banking, recognized that the market economy systematically undervalues the work that holds society together.
  86. Caregiving, mentoring, neighboring, community organizing, cultural preservation, and mutual aid.
  87. By creating a parallel exchange system that values these contributions equally,
  88. time banking makes visible the invisible economy and gives it a circulatory medium.
  89. The Russian Green Time Bank in South London, integrated with a medical practice,
  90. prescribes time banking alongside conventional treatment.
  91. Patients with chronic conditions, mental health challenges, and social isolation earn time credits by helping others, visiting homebound neighbors, gardening and community allotments, leading exercise groups, and spend credits on services they need.
  92. Studies show significant improvements in health outcomes, reduced GP visits, and dramatic reductions in loneliness.
  93. Time banking UK has documented that for every one pound invested in time banking infrastructure,
  94. eight pounds of social value is generated, measured and reduced healthcare costs, reduced social service needs, and improved community cohesion.
  95. Time banking is not a replacement for the money economy.
  96. It is a complement, a circulatory system for the relational economy that money cannot reach.
  97. It values what markets structurally ignore, the human connections that make communities resilient, healthy, and alive.
  98. Part 2, Value Creation
  99. Chapter 5, Intrinsic Value, Exchange Value, and the Dimensions of Worth.
  100. The cost of a thing is the amount of what I will call life which is required to be exchanged for it.
  101. Henry David Thoreau, Economics has a value problem.
  102. Specifically, it has collapsed a multi-dimensional phenomenon, value, into a single dimension, exchange value, measured in money.
  103. This reduction was historically understandable.
  104. The marginal revolution of the 1870s solved the classical economists' diamond water paradox.
  105. Why are diamonds expensive and water cheap when water is more useful?
  106. By replacing intrinsic value with subjective exchange value, things are worth what people will pay for them.
  107. Elegant, measurable, and operational, but also incomplete.
  108. Living systems, economics recognizes at least five dimensions of value.
  109. Exchange value, what someone will pay.
  110. This is what prices capture, essential for coordination, but blind to everything else.
  111. Use value, the genuine well-being a good or service produces.
  112. A glass of clean water has enormous use value for a dehydrated person and negligible use value for someone standing beside a spring.
  113. Use value is contextual, embodied, and often incommensurable.
  114. Systemic value, the contribution to the health of the larger system.
  115. A wetland systemic value, water filtration, flood control, carbon sequestration, biodiversity habitat, vastly exceeds its exchange value.
  116. A healthy worker's systemic value to the community vastly exceeds their wages.
  117. Developmental value, the contribution to the growth and evolution of capacities.
  118. Education has developmental value that may not show up in wages for years or decades.
  119. Mentorship, challenging experiences, and even suffering can have developmental value that no market can price.
  120. Intrinsic value, the value of being or system has simply by existing, independent of its utility to anyone else.
  121. A redwood forest has intrinsic value whether or not any human ever enters it.
  122. A species has intrinsic value whether or not it provides ecosystem services.
  123. This dimension is the most philosophically contested and the most ecologically important.
  124. An economy that recognizes only exchange value will systematically overproduce things with high exchange value and low systemic value.
  125. Speculative financial instruments, planned obsolescence consumer goods,
  126. while underproducing things with low exchange value and high systemic value, clean air, stable climate, community cohesion, childhood development.
  127. The living system's correction is not to abandon exchange value but to supplement it with institutional mechanisms that make the other dimensions visible and consequential.
  128. Carbon pricing makes systemic costs visible.
  129. Ecosystem service payments make ecological contributions measurable.
  130. Well-being indices make use value legible.
  131. Education investments honor developmental value.
  132. Rights of nature legislation enshrines intrinsic value in law.
  133. Chapter 6, care work and the invisible economy.
  134. The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.
  135. William Ross Wallace, the largest economy on earth, is invisible.
  136. The international labor organization estimates that 16.4 billion hours of unpaid care work are performed globally every day, equivalent to 2 billion people working full time.
  137. If valued at the minimum wage, this unpaid care economy would be worth approximately $11 trillion per year, roughly 9% of global GDP.
  138. This invisible economy is overwhelmingly performed by women.
  139. Globally, women perform 76.2% of total unpaid care work, 3.2 times more than men.
  140. In no country on earth do men perform an equal share of unpaid care.
  141. The invisibility of care work is not an oversight.
  142. It is a structural feature of economic measurement systems designed by and for market economies.
  143. GDP counts the value of a nanny's wages, but not a parent's identical labor.
  144. It counts the cost of nursing home care, but not the identical care provided by a family member at home.
  145. The measurement system literally cannot see the work that makes all other work possible.
  146. And yet, without care work, the market economy would collapse within days.
  147. Every worker was once a child who was fed, clothed, sheltered, taught language,
  148. socialized into cooperation and loved into the kind of human being who can show up at a workplace and contribute.
  149. Every worker who returns to work tomorrow does so because someone, usually a woman, has maintained the household, prepared the food, washed the clothes,
  150. and provided the emotional labor of relationship maintenance.
  151. Every elderly person who doesn't require paid institutional care is being sustained by unpaid family caregiving.
  152. Care work is the immune system and circulatory system of the economy,
  153. invisible when it functions well, catastrophic when it fails.
  154. The COVID-19 pandemic made this brutally visible.
  155. When schools and daycares closed, millions of workers, disproportionately women,
  156. dropped out of the labor force to provide child care.
  157. When elder care facilities became dangerous, family members stepped in.
  158. The essential workers who kept the economy running, nurses, home health aides, grocery clerks, delivery drivers,
  159. were overwhelmingly care workers and overwhelmingly underpaid.
  160. Living systems' economics insists that care work be made visible, valued, and supported,
  161. not as charity or women's issues, but as the foundational economic infrastructure it actually is.
  162. Policies that honor care work, paid parental leave, universal child care, caregiver tax credits,
  163. social security credits for unpaid caregiving, and genuine living wages for professional care workers are not social spending.
  164. They are investments in the economy's most essential infrastructure.
  165. Chapter seven, creative expression as economic driver. Imagination is the beginning of creation.
  166. George Bernard Shaw, the creative economy, art, music, design, film, gaming, fashion, architecture, advertising,
  167. publishing, and digital media is among the fastest growing sectors of the global economy.
  168. UNESCO estimates it at $2.25 trillion in annual revenue and 29.5 million jobs.
  169. In many developed countries, creative industries now contribute more to GDP than manufacturing,
  170. but the economic significance of creativity extends far beyond the creative industries.
  171. Every innovation in every sector begins as an act of creative imagination.
  172. The iPhone was an act of design creativity. The mRNA vaccine platform was an act of scientific creativity.
  173. The regenerative agriculture movement was an act of ecological creativity.
  174. Creativity is not a specialized sector. It is the generative force that drives all economic evolution.
  175. Living systems economics recognizes creativity as the economy's equivalent of photosynthesis,
  176. the process by which raw inputs, information, materials, energy, cultural context
  177. are transformed into new structures of higher order and greater utility.
  178. Just as photosynthesis converts sunlight into biological complexity,
  179. creativity converts human experience into cultural, technological, and institutional complexity.
  180. And just as photosynthesis requires specific conditions, light, water, CO2, chlorophyll,
  181. creativity requires specific conditions, psychological safety, diverse inputs,
  182. unstructured time, playful experimentation, and freedom from the threat of punishment for failure.
  183. Google's 20% time employees spend one-fifth of their time on self-directed projects,
  184. produced Gmail, Google News, and AdSense. Three M's similar policy produced post-it notes.
  185. Pixar's building was designed by Steve Jobs specifically to maximize serendipitous encounters
  186. between employees from different departments because Jobs understood that creativity
  187. lives in the unexpected intersections between different knowledge domains.
  188. An economy that suppresses creativity through overwork, excessive surveillance,
  189. risk aversion, standardized testing, underfunded arts education,
  190. and the relentless pressure to monetize every moment is an ecosystem that poisons its own
  191. photosynthesis. An economy that cultivates creativity through education that nurtures imagination,
  192. workplaces that allow exploration, communities that celebrate artistic expression,
  193. and a cultural narrative that values creation alongside consumption is an ecosystem in full bloom.
  194. 8. Social Capital and Trust Networks Trust is the glue of life. It's the most essential
  195. ingredient in effective communication. It's the foundational principle that holds all relationships.
  196. Stephen Covey, Robert Putnam's landmark bowling alone, 2000, documented the decline of social
  197. capital in America, the networks of relationships, norms of reciprocity, and institutional trust
  198. that enable collective action. Between 1960 and 2000, Americans had become less likely to join
  199. organizations, attend community meetings, socialize with neighbors, or trust each other.
  200. The title's metaphor was apt. Americans were still bowling, but no longer in leagues.
  201. The economic consequences of social capital erosion are measurable and severe.
  202. High-trust societies, Nordics, Switzerland, Japan, have lower transaction costs, more effective
  203. governance, more innovation, and higher GDP per capita than low-trust societies. Stephen Knack
  204. and Philip Kiefer's Cross-National Research found that a 10 percentage point increase in the proportion
  205. of people who say "most people can be trusted" is associated with a 0.8 percentage point increase
  206. in annual GDP growth. Over decades, this compounds into enormous differences in prosperity.
  207. Social capital is the relational infrastructure of the economy as essential as roads, broadband,
  208. or the legal system, but far harder to build, easier to destroy, and completely invisible to GDP.
  209. The living system's prescription is to treat social capital as the critical infrastructure it is,
  210. investing in community spaces, libraries, parks, community centers, supporting local institutions,
  211. neighborhood associations, religious communities, sports leagues, cultural organizations,
  212. designing cities for encounter rather than isolation, walkable neighborhoods, mixed-use
  213. development, public gathering spaces, and ensuring that economic policy does not inadvertently
  214. erode the relational fabric. It depends on. Part 3 - Human Development Economics
  215. Chapter 9 - Education as Investment in Living Systems
  216. Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.
  217. Etributisto vu bejitz. The standard economic case for education is instrumental.
  218. Education increases human capital, which increases productivity, which increases GDP.
  219. This is true, while documented, and profoundly inadequate.
  220. It's inadequate because it reduces education to a production input, the training of workers
  221. for the labor market, and ignores education's deeper functions, the cultivation of critical
  222. thinking, the development of empathy, the transmission of cultural knowledge, the nurturing of creativity,
  223. and the formation of citizens capable of democratic self-governance.
  224. Finland's education system, consistently ranked among the world's best, embodies a living systems
  225. approach. Finished children start formal school at age 7. There is no standardized testing until
  226. age 16. Homework is minimal. Recess is extensive 15 minutes per hour of instruction. Teachers are
  227. highly trained, well-paid, and trusted with professional autonomy. The curriculum emphasizes
  228. critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and emotional intelligence alongside academic
  229. content. The results. Finished students consistently perform at or near the top of international
  230. assessments, PISA, while spending fewer hours in school than students in most developed countries.
  231. Teacher burnout is low. Student well-being is high. The system demonstrates that developmental
  232. richness and academic excellence are not trade-offs but synergies. Students learn more when the
  233. educational system treats them as whole human beings rather than as vessels to be filled with
  234. testable knowledge. The Regioe Emilia approach, an early childhood education philosophy developed
  235. in northern Italy, takes this further. Children are treated as competent, creative beings with
  236. 100 languages of expression. The environment is considered the third teacher alongside parents
  237. and educators. Learning emerges from children's interests and questions rather than predetermined
  238. curricula. Documentation of children's learning processes is as valued as the outcomes. These
  239. are not fringe experiments. They are proof of concept for an educational paradigm that cultivates
  240. the full range of human capacities, cognitive, emotional, creative, social, and moral that a
  241. living economy needs. Chapter 10. Health Economics and Collective Wellbeing. It is health that is
  242. real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver. Mahatma Gandhi. The United States spends more on
  243. health care than any country on earth, $4.3 trillion in 2021, 18.3% of GDP. And yet Americans have lower
  244. life expectancy, higher infant mortality, higher rates of chronic disease, and worse health outcomes
  245. than citizens of every other developed nation, most of which spend half as much or less. This
  246. paradox dissolves when you apply the living system's lens. The US doesn't have a health care system.
  247. It has a disease treatment system. It excels at treating acute illness and performing complex
  248. procedures. It fails catastrophically at maintaining health because health is not the absence of
  249. disease but the vitality of the whole organism. And vitality depends on conditions, nutrition,
  250. exercise, sleep, social connection, purpose, clean air, clean water, safe communities,
  251. economic security that the medical system neither provides nor controls. Costa Rica spends one
  252. tenth what the US spends on health care per capita and achieves higher life expectancy.
  253. The reason is simple. Costa Rica invests in the conditions for health, universal primary care,
  254. clean water, nutrition programs, community health workers, environmental protection,
  255. rather than entreating the diseases that result from their absence. The Blue Zones research confirms
  256. this at community scale. The world's longest lived, healthiest populations share common conditions,
  257. plant-based diets, daily natural movement, strong social connections, sense of purpose,
  258. stress reduction practices, and moderate caloric intake. None of these require advanced medical
  259. technology. All of them require a social and economic environment designed for human flourishing.
  260. Living systems economics reframes health spending as ecosystem investment. Every dollar spent on clean
  261. air, nutritious food, walkable communities, social connection, economic security, and preventive
  262. care generates orders of magnitude more health than a dollar spent on treating the diseases that
  263. result from their absence. Chapter 11. Cultural vitality and economic resilience. A people without
  264. the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots.
  265. Marcus Garvey. Culture is the operating system of human societies. The shared meanings,
  266. values, narratives, practices, and institutions through which groups organize collective life.
  267. And like any operating system, its health determines the performance of everything that runs on it.
  268. Economists have traditionally treated culture as exogenous, a fixed background condition that
  269. influences economic behavior, but isn't itself an economic variable. Living systems economics
  270. recognizes culture as endogenous and essential, both shaped by and shaping economic activity
  271. and critical to economic resilience. Japan's economic resilience in the face of the 2011
  272. Tohoku earthquake and tsunami was inseparable from cultural factors,
  273. common enduring with patience and dignity, kazuna, the bonds between people, and a cultural
  274. infrastructure of community solidarity that enabled extraordinarily rapid and orderly disaster
  275. response. The economic recovery was built on cultural capital. Indigenous economic systems
  276. worldwide demonstrate that cultural vitality and economic sustainability are inseparable.
  277. The Maori economy in New Zealand, worth over $70 billion New Zealand dollars and growing faster
  278. than the national economy, is built explicitly on cultural foundations. Mononga Tenga, kinship
  279. and collective responsibility, Kaidi Akotenga, guardianship of natural resources, and mannequatenga,
  280. hospitality and generosity. These are not just cultural values. They are economic operating
  281. principles that produce resilient, regenerative, community rooted enterprises. An economy that
  282. erodes cultural vitality through homogenization, commodification of cultural expression, displacement
  283. of indigenous knowledge, or the relentless pressure to convert cultural goods into market goods,
  284. is an economy consuming its own operating system. An economy that invests in cultural vitality,
  285. supporting artistic expression, preserving linguistic diversity, honoring indigenous knowledge,
