The statement
Declared at the door, not discovered in a footnote.
Many of the volumes in this library were written with machine assistance. Not all of them, and not in the same measure — but enough of them that saying so quietly at the bottom of a page would be a way of not saying it. So it is said here, first, in the plainest English available.
It is the author's working method rather than a shortcut taken under deadline, and it is a published one. The practice is set out in Externalized Cognition: A Developmental Theory of Human–AI Co-Creation, deposited with a DOI, citable by anyone, and cited by every book on this shelf.
Externalized cognition is thinking with an instrument. A composer works at a piano rather than in silence; the piano does not write the symphony, and nobody has ever thought it did. The argument here, the judgement, the structure, the standard held to and the name on the cover are Ammanuel Santa Anna's. The machine is how quickly the thinking reaches the page, and how many drafts a single life has time for.
It is also why there are 283 volumes rather than five. That is the honest consequence, and it is the argument the paper makes: output returns as a measure of a person's thinking once the instrument is good enough. Every reader is entitled to know which instrument was in the room.
It does not mean nobody read these. Every volume is the author's, edited by him, signed by him, and answerable to him.
It does not mean the sources are decorative. Where a body of work is still having its citations verified, the shelf says sources in verification on the card and sells you nothing until they are. That notice is generated from the manuscripts themselves, not written by hand, so it cannot quietly stop being true.
It does not mean the work is unowned. Everything here is CC BY-NC 4.0 — yours to quote, excerpt, translate and teach from, with attribution, and not for resale.
It is open and it is not finished. 283 volumes stand on it today, 142 of them read aloud, and more of both arrive while you are inside. Nothing on this page is a projection: the shelf is built from the manifests and a live listing of the audio every single time, so it cannot claim a book the house does not have or a narration that is not there.
Nothing is being charged for it while that is true. The first chapter of every finished volume is open to anybody, with no card and no account.
