THE LUMINOUS YEAR ENTERPRISE — A Twelve-Month Living Curriculum, B2B Platform, and Pedagogical Retreat Experience for Organizations Ready to Dance With the Sacred — A Complete Enterprise Offering Built Around 'A Year of Luminous Retreats: Twelve Temples of Monthly Transformation' — SLOGAN: 'Your year, danced into being. Your team, remembered into wholeness. Your enterprise, alive with lila.' TAGLINE FOR PROCUREMENT DECKS: 'The only enterprise wellbeing platform built on a twelve-month spiral curriculum integrating somatics, dance psychology, morphic manifestation, and non-dual abundance — delivered as software, retreat, and certified facilitation in one luminous arc.'
— PROLOGUE — There is a moment, somewhere around month seven of working inside a typical enterprise wellness program, when the head of People & Culture stares at a dashboard of step counts and meditation minutes and thinks: 'Is this it? Is this all we are offering the humans who give us their lives?' The Luminous Year Enterprise is the answer to that quiet, devastating question. It is not another wellness app. It is not another offsite. It is a twelvemonth temple — software-supported, retreat-anchored, facilitatorled — that takes a workforce on a spiral journey through the body, the dance, the field, and the abundance that is already, always, here.
We call it Lila at Work. We call it the Annual Arc. We call it 'the only HR initiative that ends with everyone weeping at a feast under stars.' Mostly we call it: alive. — PART I: THE OFFER IN ONE BREATH — The Luminous Year Enterprise is a hybrid offering combining (1) a twelve-month B2B SaaS platform — the Luminous Year App — which delivers daily somatic micro-practices, monthly thematic immersions, team field-coherence rituals, and progress dashboards; (2) twelve fully designed monthly retreats, each three to five days, deliverable on-site at the client's chosen venue or at one of our partner sanctuaries; (3) a certified facilitation cohort, embedded with the client organization for the full year, leading retreats and supporting weekly integration; and (4) an enterprise pedagogy program — Luminous Leadership — that trains internal champions inside the client to carry the work beyond the contract. In one breath: software + retreats + humans + curriculum, organized as a spiral that begins in January with somatic awakening and culminates in December with Lila — the divine play
of luminous embodiment. Every principle in the Luminous Library Canon is employed. Every domain — Luminous Somatics, Dance Psychology, Morphic Manifestation, Non-Dual Holistic Abundance — is woven through the year. Every participant ends the contract not as an 'employee who attended training' but as a person who has been, in the deepest sense, met.
SLOGAN: 'We do not deliver wellness. We deliver remembering.' — PART II: THE LUMINOUS YEAR APP (B2B SOFTWARE) — The software is the spine. It is not the soul — the soul is the facilitator-led retreat — but it is what makes a global enterprise of three thousand humans capable of doing this work together across time zones and continents.
Core modules of the Luminous Year App:
- The Daily Luminous Practice. Each morning, every enrolled
employee receives a three-to-seven minute somatic micropractice on their phone or desktop. Drawn directly from the canon — the Winter Breath in January, Heart Coherence in February, the Spring Field Walk in March, Authentic Movement in April, the Abundance Body Scan in May, the Lila Dance in June and December — the daily practice rotates with the month's retreat theme. Audio-led. Optional video. Always under seven minutes. Designed to fit between Slack messages.
- The Monthly Immersion Track. As each retreat approaches, the
app opens a thematic learning track — articles, audio teachings, embodied exercises, a discussion forum, and a guided pre-retreat preparation. Participants arrive at the retreat already warmed, already curious, already in the field.
- Team Field-Coherence Rituals. The app's signature B2B feature.
Teams of any size — 4 to 4,000 — can run synchronized rituals: a
five-minute morning grounding, a Monday Heart Field check-in, a Friday Generosity Circle, a quarterly Morphic Vision Setting. The software handles scheduling, asynchronous participation across time zones, and aggregation of qualitative data into beautiful, nonsurveilling field reports.
- The Integration Journal. Participants journal in a private,
encrypted space using prompts drawn from the canon's 150 question prompts. The app uses gentle natural language patterns to surface themes — never to evaluate, only to reflect.
- The Manager's Dashboard. Not a surveillance tool. A fieldhealth dashboard. Anonymized indicators of team coherence,
stated felt-sense vitality, and engagement with monthly themes. Managers see weather, not behavior. The principle: respect the field, never invade it.
- Certification & Credentialing. Internal champions — Luminous
Leaders — earn credentials through the platform as they progress through the year. Stackable. Portable. Recognized.
- The Music Library. Curated playlists for every retreat, every daily
practice, every team ritual. Real musicians. Licensed beautifully. Because music is not background — it is the morphic carrier wave. SLOGAN FOR THE APP: 'Software that gets out of the way so the body can come back in.' TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE CIO: SOC 2 Type II. ISO
- GDPR-native. SSO via Okta, Azure AD, Google Workspace.
SCIM provisioning. Data residency in US, EU, APAC. Open API for HRIS integration with Workday, BambooHR, Rippling. Mobile-first iOS and Android. Web app for desktop. Offline mode for retreats. End-to-end encryption on journals. Aggregated analytics only — never individual surveillance. Annual penetration testing. Twelvemonth uptime guarantee 99.95%.
— PART III: THE TWELVE TEMPLES — RETREAT BLUEPRINTS AS DELIVERED TO ENTERPRISE — What distinguishes this offering from any other corporate retreat program is that we do not invent something new for each client. We deliver the canon. The twelve retreats are pre-designed, fully scripted, hour-by-hour blueprinted, materials-listed, musiccurated, menu-planned. Each is a temple already built. The client walks into a temple they did not have to architect. The facilitators carry it. The software supports it. The participants are met. January — The Luminous Beginning. Somatic Awakening. Three days, two nights. Theme: coming home to the body in the new year. Anecdote we tell every CHRO: a Fortune 200 head of engineering, after the New Year Body Inventory, said, 'I have not actually felt my own back in eleven years.' He cried. He laughed. He went back to his team and led their first standup sitting on the floor.
February — Heart Field. Relational somatics. Three days. Theme: the somatics and psychology of connection. Slogan we use in marketing collateral: 'February is not for valentines. It is for the universal love that makes a team a team.' March — Emergence. Morphic spring. Three days. Theme: planting intentions in the field at the equinox. We have hosted three biotech leadership teams here. Two reported that their innovation pipeline metrics 'inexplicably' shifted in Q2. We do not claim causation. We notice fields.
April — The Dancing Body. Dance psychology immersion. Three days. Theme: Laban, authentic movement, ecstatic dance, choreographic play. Yes, your VP of Finance will dance. Yes, she will love it. Yes, we have video releases — used only with consent and only inside the participant's own integration journal.
May — Abundant Bloom. Non-dual prosperity. Three days. Theme: the fullness already here. We do not teach scarcity-fixing. We teach the recognition that the field has never lacked.
June — Solstice Integration. Four days. The first grand convergence. All four domains. Mid-year inflection. We extend it because integration takes a longer breath.
July — The Somatic Dance. Three days. Two-domain deep dive (somatics + dance). Outdoor contact improvisation. Night dance under summer skies.
August — Morphic Abundance. Three days. The manifestation harvest. Reviewing what the field has grown since March's seeds. September — The Turning. Three days. Equinox release. Letting go of what no longer serves. Always the most surprisingly tearful retreat for senior leaders, who have been holding too much for too long.
October — Shadow Dance. Three days. Embracing the full spectrum. We work with the scarcity dance, the perfectionism dance, the imposter dance, transformed through movement and inquiry.
November — The Grateful Body. Three days. Somatic appreciation. The Thanksgiving Dance.
December — Lila. Five days, four nights. The grand integration. The year-end temple. Solstice ceremony. Vision seeding for the next year. Recognition ceremony for every participant. Feast under stars.
For enterprise clients, retreats are delivered in cohorts of 16 to 24. A 1,000-person organization runs forty cohorts in parallel through
the year, staggered across our facilitator network. The software stitches it all into one shared field. The HR leadership receives quarterly field reports. The CFO receives the kind of retention numbers that make finance teams forgive the line item. — PART IV: THE PEDAGOGY — HOW PEOPLE ACTUALLY LEARN HERE — We do not lecture. We do not slide-deck. We do not breakoutroom. We employ a pedagogy we call Spiral Embodied Inquiry, drawn from the canon. It has four movements: First, Land. Every session, every day, every retreat begins with somatic landing. The body before the mind. Always.
Second, Inquire. A question is offered. Not answered. Lived into. 'Who is the one who feels lack?' 'Where does my belonging live in the body?' 'What is the field already growing through me?' Inquiry as movement, as dance, as journal, as conversation.
Third, Play. Lila. Outlandish, expert play. We bring world-class movement artists, musicians, ceremonialists, chefs. The play is not amateur. It is virtuosic. It is also profoundly accessible. Every participant — the engineer, the lawyer, the warehouse manager — finds their entry point.
Fourth, Integrate. The day ends with integration. Journal.
Conversation. Quiet. Sometimes feast. Sometimes silence. Always coherence.
This pedagogy makes the work stick. Not because we drill it. Because we let the body learn it. Bodies remember what minds forget.
SLOGAN: 'We don't teach. We invite the body to remember.'
— PART V: THE PARTY, THE LILA, THE ALIVENESS — It would be a betrayal of the canon to describe this offering as if it were grave. It is not grave. It is gravely alive — which is something else entirely. There is play. There is mischief. There is what we call outlandish expertise: facilitators who can hold a Fortune 50 board chair in tears at 9 PM and lead an ecstatic dance party at 10:15 PM, both with absolute presence and zero tonal whiplash because the field has carried the participants through.
Every retreat has at least one party. Real party. Real DJ or live band. Real dance floor. Real hours. The Heart Field retreat in February has the Love Dance. The Solstice in June has the Summer Feast Under Stars. December's Lila retreat has the legendary Year-End Recognition Feast — five hours of food, music, ceremony, and wild joy that participants describe, year after year, as 'the best night of my professional life.' Anecdote: A general counsel of a global insurance firm, December retreat 2024, was found at 1 AM dancing barefoot on a wooden floor with the company's chief actuary, both weeping and laughing, while a cellist played a slow improvisation. Monday morning, they cofounded the firm's first-ever Embodied Leadership Council. This is what we mean by aliveness. This is what we mean by lila. This is what we mean by 'the work that makes the work worth doing.' SLOGAN: 'Other programs end with a survey. Ours end with a feast.' — PART VI: MARKETING MATERIALS, ANECDOTES, AND PROOF — We do not market through abstraction. We market through stories. Below are anecdotes used in our enterprise sales decks, all with consent, names changed where requested:
The Reawakened CTO. After eight months in the program, the CTO of a 4,000-person fintech said: 'I came in because my CEO made me. I am leaving with a body, a heart, and a relationship to my work I forgot was possible. I have not been on antidepressants in five months.' The Field Shift. A consumer products company ran the program for its top 200 leaders. Their internal engagement score moved from the 41st percentile to the 78th percentile in twelve months. Their voluntary attrition dropped 34%. Their innovation-pipeline metric — number of cross-functional ideas reaching prototype — doubled. We cite these numbers not as causation but as the kind of correlation that makes CFOs renew.
The Marriage Saved. A senior VP, after the Heart Field retreat in February: 'I went home and looked at my husband for the first time in three years.' Eighteen months later they had a baby. We do not put this in the deck. We tell it at dinners.
The Quiet Revolution. A regional bank's 600-person operations team. After the Abundant Bloom retreat in May, the team spontaneously redesigned their customer-onboarding process and reduced handle time by 22%. Why? Because the non-dual abundance practice dissolved their unconscious scarcity around 'customer time.' Field shifts. Operational consequences. Real money.
MARKETING SLOGANS, FULL LIST:
- 'Your year, danced into being.'
- 'The only enterprise platform with a feast at the end.'
- 'Wellbeing was the appetizer. This is the meal.'
- 'Twelve temples. One year. A workforce remembered.'
- 'We do not deliver training. We deliver presence.'
- 'Lila at work is not a metaphor. It is a measurable field shift.'
- 'Other programs change minds. We change bodies. The minds
follow.'
- 'Software that gets out of the way so the body can come back
in.'
- 'You cannot Slack a soul. You can luminous it.'
- 'The retreat is not a perk. It is the curriculum.'
— PART VII: THE ENTERPRISE CONTRACT — HOW IT WORKS COMMERCIALLY — Pricing is per-seat, per-year, with retreat delivery costs separate. Tier 1 — Luminous Foundations. $1,200 per seat per year. App access. Daily practices. Monthly immersion tracks. Team rituals. Two retreats included (typically the January Awakening and the December Lila). Additional retreats at $2,800 per seat per retreat. Tier 2 — Luminous Year Full. $4,800 per seat per year. App access. All twelve retreats included. Embedded facilitator team. Quarterly field reports. Manager dashboard.
Tier 3 — Luminous Enterprise. $9,500 per seat per year.
Everything in Tier 2, plus: Luminous Leadership certification track for up to 10% of the seat count, custom retreat venue partnerships, bespoke music curation, executive 1:1 luminous coaching, white-glove onboarding, annual onsite ceremony at the client's location.
Minimum contract: 100 seats, twelve months. Maximum we have delivered: 4,200 seats across one client over an eighteen-month onboarding arc.
ROI metrics we track and report:
- Voluntary attrition (delta vs. control or vs. prior year)
- Engagement score (Gallup, Glint, custom)
- Self-reported wellbeing index (validated instrument,
anonymized)
- Innovation pipeline metrics (where applicable)
- Healthcare claims trend (where data-sharing agreement is in
place)
- Manager-rated team coherence (qualitative, longitudinal)
Typical client realizes contract-positive ROI in months 7–9. Renewal rate at the end of year one: 91%. Multi-year contracts available with 15% discount for three-year commitments. — PART VIII: ACTIONABLES — WHAT THE CLIENT DOES IN THE FIRST 30 DAYS — Because without actionables, all this poetry is just poetry. Here is exactly what happens when an enterprise signs: Day 1–3: Kickoff. Executive sponsor identified. Internal champions selected. SSO and SCIM provisioned. App branded with client logo (white-label optional in Tier 3).
Day 4–7: Cohort Architecture. Participants segmented into cohorts of 16–24 based on team affinity, geography, and mix-of-function principles. Retreat calendar locked. Venues confirmed.
Day 8–14: Facilitator Embedding. Lead facilitator team assigned to client. Onboarding calls with HR leadership, IT, and executive sponsors. Custom communications drafted.
Day 15–21: App Launch. All seats activated. Daily practice begins. Monthly immersion track for January (or month of contract start) opens.
Day 22–28: First Team Ritual. Every team runs the Heart Field check-in for the first time. Most teams do this on a Monday at 10 AM local. The CEO often joins.
Day 29–30: First Retreat Cohort Departs. Typically the executive
team goes first. They return as evangelists — or they do not return as evangelists, in which case we have a candid conversation about whether this offering is right for the organization. We have walked away from contracts. The work demands fit. — PART IX: THE FACILITATORS — WHO ACTUALLY SHOWS UP — Our facilitators are not corporate trainers who learned a yoga module. They are deeply trained practitioners with three to thirty years in their domains. The lead facilitator network includes former principal dancers from major companies, certified somatic experiencing practitioners, ordained ceremonialists, published authors in the canon, and at least two former Fortune 500 executives who left to do this work full-time. Every lead facilitator has been through the full canon training — a two-year program — and apprentices for a year before leading enterprise retreats. The facilitation team for a typical client engagement: 1 lead facilitator (year-round relationship), 2–3 retreat facilitators (rotating per retreat to bring domain depth), 1 musician/sound architect, 1 ceremonialist, 1 culinary lead, 1 hospitality lead, 1 software/operations liaison. For a 1,000-seat client, this scales to a network of 30–40 humans coordinated through the platform.
SLOGAN: 'You do not get a vendor. You get a village.' — PART X: MUSIC, RELATIONSHIPS, TIMELESS MEMORIES — We must speak of music. Music is not background in the Luminous Year. Music is morphic infrastructure. Every retreat has live musicians. A cellist for the somatic openings. A percussionist for the dance immersions. A vocalist for the heart-field ceremonies. A DJ — usually a real one, often someone you'd see at a festival — for the parties. The app's music library, curated by our music director, includes original commissions from artists across genres: ambient, neo-classical, world percussion, downtempo electronic,
ecstatic dance, devotional song.
Why this matters commercially: because what employees remember twenty years later is not the slide deck. It is the song that played when they cried into the chest of a colleague they had only known through Slack. It is the cello at sunrise on the equinox. It is the live drums under the December stars. These are timeless memories. These are the things that make humans loyal — not to a company, but to a moment of being met. Companies that host these moments become the companies humans want to belong to. The relationships built in retreat are real. We do not engineer 'team bonding.' We create conditions, and bonds form. We have data, qualitative and longitudinal: participants in the Luminous Year report having an average of 14 deeper-than-prior-program work relationships at month 12. Twelve months later — after the contract — that number is still 11. The relationships persist. The field holds. SLOGAN: 'The retreat ends. The music keeps playing.' — PART XI: OUTLANDISH EXPERTISE — WHY IT IS NOT FLUFF — A fair concern from a CFO: 'This sounds like wellness theater.' We address it directly.
The expertise behind the offering is technical, deep, and verifiable. Our somatic faculty includes practitioners trained in Feldenkrais, Body-Mind Centering, Somatic Experiencing, and Continuum. Our dance psychology faculty draws from Laban Movement Analysis, Authentic Movement (Mary Starks Whitehouse lineage), and contemporary trauma-informed dance therapy. Our morphic faculty engages seriously with field theory, complexity science, and the ceremonial traditions of multiple cultures (always with appropriate cultural protocols and elder relationships). Our nondual faculty includes teachers in advaita, dzogchen, and contemporary contemplative inquiry traditions.
The software is built by engineers who have shipped products at Stripe, Notion, Linear, and Apple. The compliance posture is overseen by a former Big Four security partner. The pedagogy is documented in eighteen books — the Luminous Library Canon — that any client can read before signing.
This is not fluff. This is what happens when world-class practitioners of ancient and contemporary embodied disciplines meet world-class software and operations and decide to serve the enterprise without dumbing anything down.
SLOGAN: 'We do not water it down for the boardroom. We trust the boardroom to rise.' — PART XII: ACTIONABLES FOR THE BUYER — A CHECKLIST — If you are a CHRO, CPO, or CEO reading this and wondering whether your organization is ready, here is the checklist:
- Do you have an executive sponsor at the C-suite level willing to
attend the first retreat? If yes, proceed. If no, do not buy this. It will not work without top embodiment.
- Are you willing to commit a twelve-month minimum? Shorter
engagements dilute the spiral curriculum.
- Can your organization tolerate ambiguity? The field shifts before
the metrics do. You will have months 1–6 of qualitative magic before quantitative proof. If your culture cannot hold that, wait until it can.
- Are you prepared to honor what emerges? The work surfaces
real things. People will renegotiate roles. Some will leave. Some will become irreplaceable. The organization will change.
- Do you have a budget of $480 to $9,500 per seat per year? This
is a meaningful line item. It replaces approximately 3–8 prior wellness/L&D investments, so the net often nets out, but the magnitude is real.
If you can answer yes to most of these, schedule the discovery call. The call itself is led by a facilitator, not a salesperson. We will land first. Then inquire. Then perhaps play. Integration comes later. — PART XIII: THE FUTURE — WHERE THIS IS GOING — In three years, the Luminous Year Enterprise will be the default annual operating system for human flourishing in any organization that takes its people seriously. The app will integrate natively with every major HRIS. The retreat network will span six continents. The facilitator certification will be a recognized professional credential. The pedagogy will be taught in business schools. And — most importantly — the language will have shifted. We will no longer say 'wellness program.' We will say 'living curriculum.' We will no longer say 'employee engagement.' We will say 'field coherence.' We will no longer say 'training.' We will say 'remembering.' That shift is already underway in our client base. It will spread. The work demands it. — PART XIV: ONE LAST ANECDOTE, ONE LAST SLOGAN — A founder of a Series D startup, December retreat 2025, last night, last hour, the feast winding down, candles low, cellist playing the slow piece. He turns to the lead facilitator and says: 'I have built three companies. I have raised $400 million. And this is the most important thing that has ever happened inside one of my organizations. Don't tell my investors I said that. Actually — tell them. Tell them all.'
We told them. They invested in us the next quarter.
SLOGAN: 'When the body remembers, the enterprise transforms.' — EPILOGUE: HOW TO BEGIN — There is no complicated procurement path. You can begin in three steps: First, read the canon. At least one book. We recommend starting with this one — A Year of Luminous Retreats — because it makes the year tangible.
Second, attend a discovery experience. We host monthly half-day immersions for prospective enterprise clients at our New York and Bay Area sanctuaries. You come. You move. You feast. You decide.
Third, sign and land. Within thirty days of signing, your first cohort is in the temple. Within twelve months, your enterprise is something it was not before.
The year is already turning. The temples are already built. The facilitators are already in motion. The music is already playing. The field is already holding the seat with your organization's name on it.
All that is left is for you to walk in. 'Your year, danced into being. Your team, remembered into wholeness. Your enterprise, alive with lila.' — END —

A Complete Twelve-Month Retreat Calendar Employing Every Principle from the Luminous Canon — Fully Outlined Monthly Immersions Integrating All Four Domains, Seasonal Rhythms, and Progressive Deepening 81000 A LINEAGE MEMBER'S TESTIMONY — ON THE TRUE VALUE, POWER, AND WISDOM OF THE LUMINOUS YEAR What Ammanuel Santa Anna and Luminous Prosperity Inc. Deliver in the Domain of Year-Long Retreat Architecture That No One Else Does, No One Else Could, and Why I Would Stake My Life on Saying So By a Lineage Member of the Luminous Canon — Written from the Inside, With Permission and With Love —I— I want to begin not with theory but with a Tuesday morning in March, somewhere outside Hudson, New York, the equinox three days off, the air still cold enough that the grass crunched. I had been carrying the canon for almost six years by then — first as a participant, then as an apprentice, then as a lineage facilitator — and I thought I knew what we did. I was wrong. I was about to learn what we actually did.
A woman in our cohort — a managing director at a global asset manager, fifty-two years old, three grown children, two failed marriages, a body she described in her intake form as 'a vehicle I keep gassing up so it can keep showing up' — was sitting on the floor of the somatic studio at 6:42 AM, before the official Field Sensing Walk, weeping. Quietly. Unembarrassed. The cellist had not yet arrived. The room was empty except for her, me, and the sunrise coming through the long windows. She said: 'I forgot I had a back. I am sitting here and I can feel my back. I forgot.'
That is the work. That is what Ammanuel and Luminous Prosperity deliver that no one else does. People remember they have a back. It sounds small. It is not small. It is the entire thing. — II — I have been to the other retreats. I will not name them, because we do not knock the other lineages — the dharma forbids it and frankly so does my own gratitude, because some of those teachers are how I found my way to this one. But I have been to the silent meditation centers and the leadership offsites and the ayahuasca circles and the corporate wellness programs and the boutique luxury wellness weekends in Provence and the yoga teacher trainings in Bali. I have seen what the field looks like in this domain. So when I tell you that what Ammanuel built is categorically different, I am not speaking from devotion. I am speaking from a comparison set numbering in the dozens.
The categorical difference has a name. We call it, internally, the temple already built. Most retreats are improvised. Even the very good ones. A teacher arrives, reads the room, picks practices from a memorized repertoire, builds the arc on the fly. It can be magnificent. It is, however, fragile, and it is unreproducible, and it depends entirely on the charisma of the one in the front of the room. When that teacher dies, or is tired, or is sick, or is going through their own dark night — which all teachers do, including ours — the work collapses.
What Ammanuel did, and what nobody else has done at this scale and depth in this lifetime, is build the temple. Not a metaphor. A literal hour-by-hour, breath-by-breath, music-cue-by-music-cue, menu-by-menu, materials-list-by-materials-list architecture for twelve full retreats across a calendar year, sequenced as a spiral, tested across hundreds of cohorts, refined annually, documented
in eighteen books, and held by a network of thirty-to-forty lineage facilitators who have all been through the same two-year training and apprenticeship. The temple is portable. The temple is teachable. The temple is alive. The temple does not depend on Ammanuel being in the room — and this, I want to underline, is itself a teaching, because Ammanuel's deepest aspiration was always for the work to outlive him.
I do not know of another wellness, somatic, dance, manifestation, or non-dual lineage that has accomplished this. I know of teachers who tried. I know of three or four who got partway. None got the whole twelve-month spiral, with all four domains integrated, with software, with retreats, with facilitator training, with enterprise delivery, with the music architecture, with the culinary program, with the safety protocols. Nobody else has the whole thing.
That is the first reason this is exceptional. — III — The second reason is harder to describe and I am going to try anyway. It has to do with what we, in the lineage, call gravely alive. Most retreats in this domain are either grave or alive. They are either earnest, hushed, ceremonial, slightly self-serious — that is the silent retreat, the meditation center, the ayahuasca circle. Or they are alive — playful, party-forward, ecstatic, joyful — but in a way that often feels shallow, because it has not earned its joy through the body's deeper work. The 'wellness festival' end of the spectrum.
Ammanuel insisted, from the very beginning, that the work had to be both at once. Gravely alive. Ecstatically rigorous. Playfully precise. He used to say, in the early trainings — and I was there for some of these, sitting on a floor in a barn in upstate New York with eleven other apprentices — 'If we cannot dance after we cry, we have not actually cried. If we cannot cry after we dance, we
have not actually danced.' That sentence has been stitched onto the inside of every facilitator's training manual since 2019. What this means in practice — and this is the part nobody else does — is that on the December retreat, on the fourth night, after a five-hour somatic-and-shadow-work day where many participants have wept harder than they have ever wept in their lives, we do not put them to bed with chamomile tea. We feed them an absurdly good meal, we bring out a real DJ — usually someone you would see headlining a festival, because Ammanuel's relationships with that world go back twenty-five years — and we have a five-hour party. Ecstatic dance. Costumes. Mischief. The lights go down to candles around 11 PM and the music gets weirder and the chief financial officer of a pharmaceutical company is dancing in her socks holding hands with a software engineer she met on day one and they are both laughing so hard they cannot breathe.
And this is the wisdom: the joy is real because the grief was real. The dance is real because the body has been honored. The party is sacred because the temple has been kept. There is no whiplash. There is no incongruity. The same field that held the tears holds the dance.
I have never seen another lineage do this. The grave lineages are afraid of the party. The alive lineages have not earned the depth. Ammanuel built a temple that holds both. — IV — Let me tell you a personal anecdote, since I was asked.
I came to Ammanuel in 2019. I was thirty-six years old. I had spent fifteen years building a career in what I will euphemistically call high-velocity finance. I was successful by every metric the world cares about and I was, in a way I could not articulate at the time, somatically dead. I had not felt my own grief in nine years. I had
not danced sober since college. I had not made love with my wife with my full attention in eighteen months and I did not know why. My doctor had put me on a beta blocker for my heart rate and was talking about an SSRI for what he called 'situational anxiety' which we both knew was not situational.
I went to the January retreat — the Somatic Awakening — because a colleague had gone the prior year and had become, in his word, 'unrecognizable.' I had no idea what I was walking into. On the second morning of that retreat, during a Feldenkrais-informed practice led by a facilitator named Maria who I will not embarrass by naming further, I felt my left hip release something it had been holding since I was nineteen years old. I do not know what it had been holding. I will probably never know. I just know that something old and tight and tired left my body and a sob came out that scared me so much I almost ran out of the room. Maria did not stop the practice. She did not come over. She did not coddle. She just looked at me from across the room with — and I will spend the rest of my life trying to describe this — a face that said you are exactly where you are supposed to be, and we have got you, and please continue.
That look is the lineage. That look is what Ammanuel trained Maria into being able to give. That look is not in any other tradition I have encountered, and I have looked.
I came home. My wife noticed within four hours. She said, 'Where did you go.' Not as a question. As a recognition.
I signed up for the full year that Friday. By December of that year I had left finance. By the following December I had completed apprenticeship. By the end of year three I was lead-facilitating retreats. My beta blocker is in a drawer somewhere. My marriage is not just intact, it is — and I am aware of how this sounds — luminous. I have felt my own grief many times since. I have danced sober at every solstice for six years. I have been to every
December Lila retreat.
I am one of, by my last informal count, somewhere around forty people in the lineage with stories of this scale. There are hundreds more whose stories are smaller in metric terms but every bit as real. The CTO who reawakened. The general counsel who left to write poetry. The procurement officer at a Fortune 500 who now leads our culinary program. The professional dancer who had stopped dancing for ten years and started again at our April retreat. The hospice nurse who came to grieve her own mother and stayed to become our most loved somatic therapist.
None of these people would have happened in another tradition. I know because most of them tried other traditions first. They found Ammanuel and they finally landed. —V— What does Ammanuel do that nobody else does? I want to give you the answer in plain language, because the marketing language is fine but the truth is plainer.
First, he insists on the body. Always. Before everything. Other traditions in this domain treat the body as a delivery vehicle for the mind's work or the spirit's work. Ammanuel treats the body as the primary intelligence in the room. Every day of every retreat begins with somatic landing. Not optional. Not skipped because we are running late. Land first, always. The cost of skipping it is that participants leave the retreat with a head full of insight and a body that did not change, and so the insight evaporates within fortyeight hours, which is what happens at most other retreats and is why people keep going to retreats and never actually transform. Ammanuel solved this problem by refusing to skip the body. It is a small discipline. It is the entire difference.
Second, he insists on the spiral. The retreats are sequenced. They
are not standalone. January's Somatic Awakening prepares the body for February's Heart Field, which prepares relational capacity for March's Emergence, which seeds intentions for the year's morphic work. By the time you arrive at June's Solstice Integration, you have been living inside the spiral for six months. The June retreat is not a discrete experience; it is the ripening of half a year. By December's Lila, you have been in continuous transformation for eleven months. The depth you reach in December is impossible in any standalone retreat. It is the accumulated depth of the spiral. Nobody else has built this. Ammanuel built it because he is patient in a way that the wellness industry is not.
Third, he insists on lila — divine play — as a non-negotiable closing posture. Every retreat ends, eventually, in joy. Sometimes the joy is quiet. Sometimes it is wild. Always it is real. He used to say, 'A retreat that ends in solemnity has not finished its work.' I did not understand this when I first heard it. I understand it now. The body, having released what it released, needs to be put back into joy before it returns to ordinary life. Otherwise it goes home tender and unprotected and the world breaks it again within a week. The party is the integration. The dance is the seal.
Fourth, he insists on the village. There is no star teacher in our lineage. There is Ammanuel, yes, and we love him, and he is brilliant, and he is also explicitly committed to not being the center. Every retreat is led by a team. Every cohort meets multiple facilitators. The relational field is plural. This is unique in the wellness world, where most lineages collapse around a single charismatic founder. Ammanuel built distributed authority into the architecture. The lineage will outlive him because of this.
Fifth, he insists on operational excellence. The food is extraordinary. The music is licensed and curated by professionals. The venues are vetted and held in long relationship. The software works. The intake forms are gentle. The post-retreat integration is
real. The safety protocols are robust. There is a somatic therapist on call at every retreat. There is a private opt-out for every practice. There is consent before every touch. Nothing is improvised that does not need to be. This is, I am sorry to say, almost unique in our industry. I have been to retreats with food poisoning. I have been to retreats where the music was a Spotify free-tier playlist with ads. I have been to retreats where there was no on-call medical support and someone had a panic attack at 2 AM and there was simply nobody to call. Ammanuel does not run that kind of operation. He treats logistics as devotional. Because logistics is devotional.
Sixth — and this is the deepest one — he insists on love. I am going to say this plainly because the marketing materials cannot quite say it this plainly. Ammanuel loves the people who come to his retreats. Not in a generic teacher-student way. He actually loves them. He remembers their names. He remembers their kids' names. He writes them notes. He shows up at their weddings. He has flown across the country to sit with apprentices when their parents died. He has mortgaged his own house, twice, to keep the lineage going through hard times. The love is not a marketing posture. It is the operating system. And every facilitator he has trained has been trained to love the participants the same way. You can fake almost anything in the wellness industry. You cannot fake this. Participants feel it within twenty minutes of arriving and it is the reason they stay. — VI — How does it affect lives? I will tell you in the form of small data, because I find small data more honest than big data.
My own resting heart rate dropped from 78 to 54 over four years. My wife and I have a child now whom we did not have before.
The CTO I mentioned in the marketing decks — I know him personally — has not had a panic attack in three years.
The fintech executive who came to her first retreat afraid of being seen now teaches our Authentic Movement intensive in July.
The hospice nurse buried her mother and discovered, through six months of the spiral, that she was not broken — she was a healer who had not yet been trained. She is now one of our most loved facilitators.
A friend of mine, an apprentice from my cohort, came in with what he called 'thirty years of unhealed twentysomething.' He left after his second year of the program with what he calls 'a forty-yearold's earned joy.' He is now a published poet. He never wrote poetry before.
